Charlie’s Hot Dogs: A Taste of History in Alpha, NJ

Located at 1122 East Boulevard in Alpha, NJ, the story of Charlie’s stretches back nearly a century. Their hot dog tradition began in 1925, when the Fencz family began serving hot dogs to customers of their billiards hangout. What began as a way to feed hungry pool players eventually became one of the area’s most distinctive hot dog destinations.

From Pool Room to Hot Dog Landmark

The original Charlie’s was about much more than food. Their family business grew into a local gathering place, with a candy-store-style entrance; a vintage cash register; a barber shop connection, and a pool table in the back.

According to a historical account, the family made remarkably few changes to its cooking process over the decades… keeping Grandma Fencz’s guarded family recipe consistent even with all the modern upgrades to their kitchen and cooking equipment.

This sense of continuity lives on for the next generation of Charlie’s  fans. Back then, it wasn’t simply a place to grab a hot dog. It was where generations could come together, share a meal and enjoy a little conversation. That’s what the new owners of Charlie’s Hot Dogs seeks to preserve with their modern rendition of the beloved neighborhood meetup spot.

The Mysterious “Mealie” – How Charlie’s Famously Does Hot Dogs

If you’re going to Charlie’s, you’ll likely hear about the Mealie. This is the restaurant’s signature hot dog. A Mealie Dog gets covered with Charlie’s famous secret sauce and then topped with chopped onions, hot peppers, and a pickle for the finishing touch.

The sauce itself is a sweet-and-sour Hungarian-style onion sauce associated with Grandma Fencz. It’s long been one of the restaurant’s most closely guarded secrets.

The original preparation was just as distinctive. The hot dogs were cooked slowly in oil over low heat, while the buns were steamed to order. The result was a hot dog with a preparation and flavor profile that became uniquely associated with Charlie’s.

A New Chapter for an Old Favorite

Like many longtime local businesses, Charlie’s Pool Room eventually closed its doors. The original establishment shuttered in 2014, marking the end of an era. But the story didn’t stay finished for long.

In July 2025, Charlie’s returned to Alpha, reopening the longtime location as Charlie’s Hot Dogs. The revival brought back the Mealie and the beloved secret sauce while giving the space a refreshed look and an expanded menu.

The renewed restaurant also pays tribute to its past. Historical memorabilia and artifacts from the former Charlie’s Pool Room help connect the modern space with the establishment that generations of customers remember.

That combination of old and new is part of the appeal. You can walk in for a quick lunch, order a Mealie, and at the same time experience a little piece of Alpha history.

More Than Just a Hot Dog

Today, Charlie’s Hot Dogs represents something that can be increasingly difficult to find: a local food tradition that has survived through changing times.

Alpha itself has a fascinating history, having developed around the area’s railroad and cement industries in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Charlie’s became part of that community story, evolving from a family-run pool room and neighborhood hangout into a destination known for its distinctive hot dogs.

Whether you remember the original Charlie’s Pool Room or are discovering Charlie’s Hot Dogs for the first time, the experience is about more than what’s on the plate. It’s about a nearly century-old recipe, a family tradition, a secret sauce and a small New Jersey community with a story worth tasting.

So the next time you’re in the Alpha area and craving something with a little history behind it, consider stopping by Charlie’s Hot Dogs. Order a Mealie, ask about the secret sauce, and enjoy a bite of a tradition that has been part of the community since 1925.
